What are "Heritage Eggs," Anyway?

Our chickens roam, scratch, and snack their way around the pasture, and the eggs they lay are as colorful and full of life as they are.

The flock is a fun mix of heritage breeds like Wyandottes, Turkens, and Americanas. Each one brings something different to the egg basket, whether it’s the deep brown shells from the Wyandottes, the quirky charm of our Turkens, or the soft blue eggs from our Americanas. Together, they make up a flock that’s as diverse and down-to-earth as the farm itself.

Beginner’s Guide to Chick Care

Bringing home baby chicks is an exciting experience. Their fluffy, poofy cheeks make it easy to fall in love! But as adorable as they are, caring for them requires attention to detail. Whether you're raising them for eggs or as pets, here's what you need to know to get started.

1. Housing and Heat

Chicks need warmth, especially in their first few weeks. Here's a quick guide to heating requirements:

  • Week 0-1: 90°F - 95°F

  • Week 1-2: 85°F - 90°F

What is a Herd Share at McGreen Acres?

We don’t sell raw milk. We do something better. We offer you a way to own a part of the herd. It’s called a herd share, and it’s a simple, legal way to enjoy fresh milk straight from the cows you co-own. When you buy a herd share, you're not buying milk, you're buying into the life of a dairy cow. That means your share of the milk is yours to pick up each week, just like any other co-owner.

Here’s how it works:

Meet the Ladies Behind the Milk

A peek into the personalities within our herd share. At McGreen Acres, our herd share program isn’t just about a product, it’s a relationship. Our herd share members don’t just help maintain milk cows for part of the milk production, they become part of the story that starts in our pastures and ends at your table. So we’d like to introduce you to the real stars of the show: the cows who make it all happen. Each one has her own story, personality, and quirks. Every gallon of milk reflects the love and care we pour into their lives.

Disabling the Beeper Alarm on GQF MFG 1500 Series Cabinet Incubators

I went looking around on the web for instructions on how to disable the extremely loud beeping noise our GQF Manufacturing incubator was making every time the egg turning system was going and found that there are some explanations out there, but not munch in the way of "how-to". We like to keep the incubator in the house because of the ants we have down in the stables. Below are some pointers on how to do this. You seriously only need a flat-blade screwdriver or a socket driver.

Selling Chicken Eggs in Texas at the Farm

I wanted to share with yall the research we did on selling eggs in Texas. We are very by the books because it's hard to always assume positive intent when you are meeting people from Facebook or Craig's List for the first time. Therefore, the laws that are meant to protect you, also protect us from those who try to make a quick dollar by exploiting those same laws in court. In those cases, it helps to know the law well.

A Day in the Life of the McGreen Chicken

To get a good idea of the quality of product you are getting from any farm or homestead, it usually helps to know what the animals are doing on the farm. Our chickens and ducks have really interesting lives and behaviors. Obviously we’ve named a few with distinct characteristics, but in general they all get to follow the same routine each day.

Rise and Shine

Our chickens start out the day way before we could ever get out there. On a full moon, the roosters actually don’t really sleep much. They crow pretty much the whole time from their roost in the stables.

Rabbit Breeding System

When it comes to rabbit breeding, I’ve been more fascinated about finding a system over the actual “act” of breeding. Specifically, how do I know who to mate with who. There is plenty of literature out there if you are looking for “How to Breed Rabbits” that tell you all about the physical act, but very few articles tell you about how to pair two bunnies. That’s what I want to talk about. This is a discussion. I want to make it clear I'm not a specialist when it comes to genealogy.
